Abandoned Route / Wasted Space

The old road that runs along the former Frieswijk primary school has been abandoned for a long time. With the loss of the road's practical function, a remarkable 'wasted' space has come into existence. The loss of its former function makes it possible to really emphasize the spatial effect of (walking) the abandoned route.

The old road is closed off from traffic by traffic signs. Four plates of these signs are replaced for the installations by plates that show the text 'verlaten route' (abandoned route) and 'loze ruimte' (wasted space). A folly made out of wood placed on the middle of the abandoned road seduces visitors to walk the route towards it. The building's exterior is made up of all straight walls. When the visitor enters the small building the bowl-shaped interior (an arch turned upside down) is revealed.

The bowl-shaped interior focusses attention on the narrow space between the adjecent rows of trees and the foliage high above the spectator. The folly really is a 'convertible building' of which the actual roof is made up of the foliage above it. The bowl -shaped space is big enough for an adult to lay down in.
